Guy films TV advert

IF you were in Keswick, Cumbria, on the hottest day of the year so far, you may have been wondering what Guy Wilks was doing at the summit of a sheer fell.

The British Rally Champion wasn’t up there sheep spotting that’s for sure! He was actually filming a TV advert for innovative power tool brand Evolution.

The 30-second commercial has been designed to promote Evolution’s brand new OUTRAGE 36V Li-Ion Multipurpose Cordless Circular Saw.

The concept is closely under wraps at the moment but will be made public very soon and rest assured it will be worth the wait.

Evolution is delighted to work with Wilks on the project. Operations Director Steve Bulloss said: “It is very exciting to be associated with a true champion like Guy.

"He is a leading figure in British motorsport and being a proud British-based company Evolution couldn’t be happier with the connection.”

The advert is due to be aired for the first time next week (July 1) on popular Freeview, Satellite and Cable channels such as Sky Sports, DAVE, Comedy Central, Watch, FX, Eurosport and ESPN Classic.

Keep checking guywilks.com to see the Evolution ad from next week.

Early exit in Belgium

GUY has vowed to bounce back after his early exit from the Belgium Ypres Rally.

Double British champion Guy and co-driver Phil Pugh were running 11th on their IRC debut in the factory-backed Proton Satria Super 2000.

But on the last corner of stage five, the 26km Hollebeke 2 test, they understeered into a ditch and hit a lump of concrete trying to get back on the road.

The impact broke the track control arm and despite limping to the end of the stage and making emergency roadside repairs in the darkness, it was considered too risky to attempt Friday's final stage.

Guy told guywilks.com: "I'm disappointed. The whole team is. The Proton had been really well received by the IRC fans and they were brilliant helping us to get back on the road.

"We managed to make running repairs at the end of the stage but it was just too dangerous to carry on.

"I am already thinking ahead to Rally Russia. We always knew it was going to be difficult against the more experienced teams here. But we know what we have got to do and given time and testing, we'll be right up there."

Guy and Phil are seeded car 7 in the factory-supported Satria Neo Super 2000 for the opening leg of Belgium's Ypres Rally.

The rally starts at 17:30 in the market square of Ypres and tonight's action consists of six special stages around Mesen, Hollebeke and Lille-Eurometropole before returning to Ypres at 01:00.

In his latest blog from Belgium, Guy said rain is forecast for the last three night stages.

Guy and Phil completed five runs of the 5km tarmac shakedown stage yesterday working on set-up.

Guy told guywilks.com: "We have set ourselves a sensible target for this weekend. We will be driving fast enough to make the car work but we won't be taking any huge risks.

"We need to get as much mileage and data as we can on tarmac and be ready to fight the more experienced IRC teams later in the season."

Proton IRC debut

PROTON has today confirmed its participation in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with immediate effect.

The stunning Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 - designed and built by British team Mellors Elliot Motorsport - will contest all seven remaining rounds of the 2009 IRC.

A full two-car programme is planned for 2010.

Double British champion Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil Pugh will lead Proton's IRC challenge, starting with the Belgium Ypres Rally (18-20 June).

Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, Managing Director of Proton Holdings Bhd, said: "We are very excited to have Guy Wilks driving for Proton in the IRC.

"After his stunning performance in the recent Pirelli Rally, we are very positive about our capabilities to put up a strong challenge.

"MEM has done a great job with the Proton Satria Neo S2000 and we hope to continue improving as the year progresses."

Wilks, 28, runner-up in the 2005 Junior World Rally Championship, said: "This is fantastic news and a fantastic opportunity. Proton and MEM are highly ambitious but they are also very realistic as newcomers to the IRC.

"We need to make progress on every round and be ready to fight for the championship in 2010."

Proton's IRC challenge marks the Malaysian manufacturer's return to a global rally series. Karamjit Singh won the 2002 Production World Rally Championship in an MEM-run Proton PERT.

GUY and co-driver Phil Pugh will debut the MML Sports Mitsubishi Evo X in rally-crazy Latvia next week.

Double British champ Guy will take on four other national champions in Rally Talsi (16/17 May) - in front of more than 40,000 fanatical fans.

He completed his first miles in the Evo X at MIRA yesterday and a gravel test is scheduled in Latvia immediately before the rally start.

Guy told guywilks.com: “My first impressions of the MML Evo X are good but MIRA was more about familiarisation, systems checking and mapping work on the engine.

“It won’t be until we get to a gravel road next week at the pre-event test to see for sure how good it is.

“But it was an easy decision when MML Sports asked me to drive for them. The team has a huge amount of experience at the top of the sport.”

MML Sports is the management team of the old Ralliart Europe, which used to run Mitsubishi’s world rally programme.

MML boss John Easton said: “We chose Guy as he is clearly a quick driver; double British champion and when you look at his time in the Production World Rally Championship, he was quicker than any of the drivers out there.

“He’s also very sensible and has lots of Evo 9 experience, which means he will be able to give excellent feedback to the team.”

John added: “We’re expecting something in the region of 40 top class Group N cars in Latvia so we will have a genuine understanding of how competitive our car is.

“I think both the team and Guy realise it won’t be a walk in the park; he’ll have to drive well and as a team, we’ll use all of our experience to get the best result possible.”

The 2009 BTA Talsi Rally begins with a double-run superspecial around the streets of Talsi town on Saturday afternoon and finishes with a 33.4km stage on Sunday afternoon.

Guy will face competition from Finnish champion Juha Salo, Latvian champion Aivis Egle, Lithuanian champion Vytautas Svedas and the Estonian champion Ott Tanak.

Rally chiefs have organised a ‘Drift-off’ after the rally - with the rally drivers taking on the best of Latvia’s drift drivers to see who has the best sideways skills.

Car destroyed, Guy and Phil unhurt

GUY and co-driver Phil Pugh escaped unhurt when their car was destroyed by fire on today's Pirelli International Rally.

Double British champion Guy was managing a comfortable 26-second lead on his Super 2000 debut when things went horribly wrong on stage eight - Trinket 2.

Six other crews stopped to try and help put out the blaze but the Proton was burnt out.

Guy and Phil had led from the start in the stunning Proton Satria Neo, run by Mellors Elliott Motorsport.

They were fastest on Friday's two night stages to hold an 18.7-second lead over Mark Higgins going into today's final leg.

The pair were quickest again on stages three and four and had increased their lead to 25 seconds by the midday service.

Guy told guywilks.com: "We are absolutely distraught. The Proton is mega to drive and has so much potential. Everything was going to plan. We were managing things from the front, determined to reward Proton and MEM with victory . . . then disaster.

"I must thank everyone who tried to help put out the fire. That's the true spirit of rallying. Yes, we are rivals on the stages but we all share the same passion and no one likes to see a rally car destroyed."

Irishman Keith Cronin (Mitsubishi Evo 9) overhauled Higgins' Subaru on the final stage to win the Pirelli by just two seconds.
HERE is the stunning Proton Super 2000 car Guy will debut on the Pirelli International Rally this weekend (17/18 April).

Guy and co-driver Phil Pugh were fine-tuning the car at official shakedown this morning before giving media rides to the BBC, ITV and SkySports.

Double British champion Guy first tested the Satria Neo - designed and built by Mellors Elliott Motorsport - in Wales last month.

He told guywilks.com: "We've only done around 100 miles in the Proton but I know it is a winner.

"Chris Mellors and his team have done an incredible job with the car and I'm determined to reward MEM and Proton with their first Super 2000 victory on an international rally. We're going to the Pirelli to win."

Guy and co-driver Phil Pugh will be chasing a record third straight win on the Pirelli, round two of the 2009 British Rally Championship.

The only other back-to-back winners were Malcolm Wilson/Terry Harryman (Ford Escort) in 1979 and 1980. Wilson is now boss of the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.

GUY was finally confirmed as double British rally champion today after an independent hearing at the RAC Club in London.

The three-man panel upheld the MSC National Court ruling to reinstate Guy as the winner of last September's Trackrod Rally Yorkshire - giving him the 20 points he needed to clinch the 2008 title.

It means Guy can at last celebrate his back-to-back title triumph after months of uncertainty. Mitsubishi Motors UK also retained its British Teams title.

Guy won every stage on the Trackrod - but was later excluded in a row over the size of a steering wheel bolt on his works Mitsubishi.

Both Guy and title rival Mark Higgins were at the hearing at the RAC Club.

Guy said: "I know in my own mind that we won it fair and square on the stages, but I have not been able to celebrate it properly...until now!

"It will be nice to see the official statement in black and white."

Guy clinched the 2008 title with three wins (Pirelli, Trackrod, Rally GB leg 1) and two second places (Isle of Man, Ulster).

GUY is working flat out on other options after Subaru's shock withdrawal from the FIA World Rally Championship.

Double British champion Guy was just hours from signing a contract with Prodrive for 2009 when the pullout was announced on Tuesday morning.

Guy said: "I'm absolutely stunned. We have been working so hard to earn this opportunity and thanks to the generosity of rally fans who backed the Wilks 500 Club and a major private investor we were so close to making it happen.

"The money was in place. The final amendments to the contract had been agreed and we were due to sign this week and hold a media lunch on Friday."

The deal would have seen Guy and co-driver Phil Pugh contest a minimum of eight rounds of the 2009 WRC as the third official factory car, starting on Rally Ireland next month.

Guy added: "It's so sad to see Subaru quit the WRC. They were the iconic team with millions of fans around the world. The WRC is part of Subaru's DNA.

"It would have been a privilege to be the first Brit since Colin and Richard to drive for Subaru and I was really look forward to working with David Richards.

"But this is now yesterday's news. We can't change it. We have to move on and work hard for tomorrow."
